This isn't the only time we hear Jesus clarify His attitude towards His purpose when He was here on earth. In Mark 10:44-45, He said, "And whoever wishes to be most important and first in rank among you must be servant of all. For even the Son of Man came not to have service rendered to Him, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for (instead of) many." Jesus makes it very clear that every believer who has chosen to follow after Him and serve in His kingdom, must understand the call to servanthood. What's interesting is that the Greek explanation for servant in this verse refers to someone who has been well trained and become highly skilled in their particular area of service. Jesus sets the bar of servanthood for believers to a high standard of excellence. Our purpose includes representing the character and nature of God with unconditional love and compassion, efficiently ministering to the needs of people; to see their lives significantly touched and transformed by His truth and power. This is a service that cannot be taken lightly, or haphazardly. Our duty is to serve unselfishly and wholeheartedly, being fully committed and equipped to be be highly efficient servants for God's kingdom, just as Jesus was. 1 Corinthians 1:9 tells us that we are in partnership with Jesus, the greatest servant of all, through the Holy Spirit. That means we can confidently trust and rely on Him for on the job training! As we remain in Him, His grace will cause us to serve others as He did. Nothing Jesus did was insignificant and always brought results. He served others for their benefit. It's time to take our level of servanthood to a new level as we imitate Him.
